The Bike Course Description
You are responsible for your own safety while out on the course so be cautious and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Sections of the course will be fully open to vehicular traffic, much of which is tourists sightseeing and NOT looking for cyclists. BE ATTENTIVE! Flagpersons and volunteers will be at all major intersections. We know this is a race, but please keep safety your utmost priority.
Sprint Triathlon = 25km - Exit transition turning left onto the paved Lake Minnewanka Road. The Minnewanka Loop is very scenic with some rolling hills and a few twists and turns. Do 1.5 loops, turn left and then enjoy the flats into the Town of Banff. Just before the bridge crossing the Bow River, turn right off Banff Avenue to finish at T2.
Olympic Triathlon = 38km – Exit transition turning left onto the paved Lake Minnewanka Road. The Minnewanka Loop is very scenic with some rolling hills and a few twists and turns. Do 2.5 loops, turn left, and then enjoy the flats into the Town of Banff. Just before the bridge crossing the Bow River, turn right off Banff Avenue to finish at T2.DRAFTING RULES WILL BE IN EFFECT FOR BOTH RACES.
SHEEP ON ROAD: There will be signs posted to indicate a section of the Loop in which there is a strong possibility that you will encounter Rocky Mountain Sheep on the road. This is one of the elements reminding us that we are in a protected natural environment. The sheep are not dangerous, but please try to give them some room (about 30m) while riding in a safe manner.
TEXAS GATES: There are two Texas Gate crossings along the course located approximately 500 metres on each side of the Transcanada Highway overpass. For anyone preferring not to ride directly over the Texas Gates, a 2 foot wide wooden plank will cover the far RIGHT side of the Texas Gates for you to ride over. CAUTION: FOR YOUR SAFETY, DO NOT WALK OVER THE TEXAS GATES! A volunteer will be at each Texas Gate to monitor the athletes crossing and give you direction, if necessary.
