O'Meara Takes Saunders Subaru Half Championship for Third Year in a Row McMahon Participates; Lucy Smith Takes Top Spot for the Women

Victoria, BC - Close to 800 athletes from as far away as Macau, Australia and Mexico took part in the Saunders Subaru Victoria Triathlon today at Hamsterly Beach at Elk Lake Park.  Windy conditions made for a challenging swim, but the rain held off and the sun came out as athletes began to cross the finish line at the 17th annual running of this Canadian classic event.

In the Half Iron race, London-bound Olympian Brent McMahon, who did the swim and bike portion of the event with 2008 Olympian Carolyn Murray, was second out of the water with a speedy time of 22:19. McMahon, who was using the event as an Olympic preparation race, completed the bike portion of the event in a time of 2:34:18. Murray completed the 21.1k run portion of the relay with a time of 1:30:57.

In the pro women's field of the Half Iron race, former Series podium finisher Janet Nielsen lead out of the water with a swim time of 26:40, with National Champion Lucy Smith almost eight minutes behind. Both Smith and Nielsen performed well on the bike, but Smith ended up overtaking Nielsen on the run to finish in 4:41:37, her first ever Championship win at this event.

On the men's side, Adam O'Meara lead the way through all three disciplines, with Nathan Killiam just several minutes behind.  O'Meara crossed the finish line in first place with his young son in tow with a time of 4:00:14 to take the Saunders Subaru Victoria Triathlon Championship title for a third year in a row.

The Saunders Subaru Victoria Triathlon is the second race in the Subaru Western Triathlon Series.  The next stop on the Series is July 8th in Vancouver.  Full results for today are available here.
