Vancouver, BC - Beautiful summer weather greeted athletes and spectators at Locarno Beach Park today for the 6th annual Subaru Vancouver Triathlon, which attracted almost 800 participants, including Vancouver 2010 Ski-Cross Gold Medalist Ashleigh McIvor and London-bound Olympians Paula Findlay and Brent McMahon.
McMahon did the swim portion of the three distances on three different relay teams as part of his Olympic preparation training, including one with McIvor, who is still rehabilitating after tearing her ACL at the X Games earlier last year. McIvor completed the bike portion of the Sprint distance with McMahon in a time of 39:18. Their Relay Team - the "Olympic Dream Team" - completed the Sprint Relay in a time of 1:09:55. McMahon was first out of the water in all three races he participated in.
Findlay, a five-time Gold Medal World Champion and one of Canada's potential stars at the London 2012 Olympics, participated in the Sprint distance at the event. She was the first female to cross the finish line with a time of 1:01:36 and was third overall. Findlay opted to use the Vancouver event as an Olympic tune-up race instead of the Edmonton ITU Triathlon World Cup, which was also happening this weekend in her hometown.
Athletes were treated to warm, calm waters, sunshine and a stunning city skyline backdrop as they participated in either the Half Iron, Olympic or Sprint distance this morning. In the pro women's field of the Half Iron race, local triathlete Gillian Clayton took the Championship title with a time of 4:26:40, beating another local triathlete, Rachel Kiers, by almost four minutes.
On the men's side, Elliot Holtham of Vancouver took his first Series Champion title today with an impressive time of 3:55:22. Nathan Killiam of Surrey, BC came in second place with a time of 4:03:42.
The Subaru Vancouver Triathlon is the third race in the Subaru Western Triathlon Series. The next stop on the Series is August 12th in Sooke, BC. Full results for today are available at www.triseries.ca/results.php
