Banff, AB – The incredibly picturesque mountain community of Banff is preparing to host 1000 athletes this Saturday from all across North America, and as far away as the UK and Australia, in the 3rd annual Subaru Banff Triathlon.
Coming off the spectacular London Olympic Games, this race has attracted a number of Olympians to carry on the spirit and compete in the Olympic Challenge! Triathletes Brent McMahon, just home from London, and Lisa Mensink, Beijing OIympian, will be contending for the top spots in the Olympic Distance. The competition will be fierce!
From outside the triathlon world comes Rosie MacLennan, who was the only Canadian gold-medalist at the London Olympic Games for an amazing display of gymnastic ability on the trampoline. Along with her are Olympic modern pentathlete Joshua Riker-Fox, synchronized swimmer Alison McKenny, wrestler Gordon Bertie and others.
Also adding to the Olympic spirit, the Subaru Banff Triathlon is the Provincial Sprint Championships this year. There will be an opportunity to qualify for the 2013 World Sprint Championships in London for one male and one female in each age category. This race will send 24 athletes to compete for Canada on the 2012 London Olympic course! Competitors at this event have the opportunity to experience for themselves what the Brownlee brothers did this year at the London Summer Games.
The Subaru Banff Triathlon is the final stop for the Subaru Western Triathlon Series; following events in Shawnigan Lake, Victoria, Vancouver and Sooke. The Series has been an enormous success this year, drawing more and more athletes of every ability level and showcasing some of the most beautiful and unique triathlon destinations in the world. Finishing the series in Banff National Park is the perfect way to wrap up an excellent racing season and celebrate the amazing achievements of all the athletes who competed this year!
