Green initiatives for the event...

  1. The event is anchored in Elk Lake Park, a Capital Regional District Park, who mission includes “Endowed with a temperate climate, a rich ecology, stunning landscapes and proud histories, our diverse ‘community of communities’ will be one of the world’s premier places to live, work and visit. Together, we will strive to create livable, vibrant communities, practice exemplary environmental stewardship and build a prosperous and sustainable economy”.
  1. E-Impact – over 98% of registration is done online saving thousands of printed registration forms from going unused.
  2. E-newsletter – monthly newsletters are sent out eliminating printing, mailing, etc.
  3. ace Packages – Do not use plastic bags for race packages instead use Blue recycling bags that can be used at home for curbside pick-up. A virtual information package is emailed out to all participants including race technical information and sponsor offers.
  4. Reduce Carbon Footprint – encourage car pooling and promote car pooling program PickUpPal (www.pickuppal.com). It is free to join and to use. PickupPal can track the number of rides they have given or taken and the number of kilometres they have carpooled and we can keep track of the amount of carbon emissions we have collectively reduced as a result!
  5. On the run – Do not use plastic water bottles – Use large water jugs with cups – we are moving toward non-wax cups.
  6. Give athletes reusable bike water bottles on the cycle course instead of plastic water containers.
  7. Working with Sponsors – like Level Ground Trading (coffee), who have a commitment to Zero Landfill Waste. All of Level Ground Trading's cups, stir sticks and napkins are to be composted.
  8. Participants and volunteers are asked to bring their own water bottles which they can refill at the transition.
  9. Porta-potties - use environmentally friendly sanitizer solution and toilet paper made with recycled content.
  10. Discarded and unclaimed clothes are donated to charity.
  11. Pedal Power – the use of lead cyclists on the run course.
  12. Greener Garbage – the garbage collection company, Apline, collect and separate garbage, recycling and composting
